Home Learning Week 1

Dear Parents and Whanau
This week in maths your child has participated in a unit called “Counting on Probability”. The activities in this unit have focused on the counting of possible outcomes and simple events. We have learnt to count the number of outcomes. We have also learnt how to find the probabilities of different outcomes. Here are three problems you can try at home. Your child’s homework is to try at least one, but feel free to do both.

1) Dice and Dollar: How many different outcomes are there when a dice is rolled and a dollar coin is tossed together? What is the probability of getting a head and an even number? What is the probability of getting tails and an odd number?

2) Dice and Spinner: Make a cardboard spinner that is divided into three equal sections (⅓). Number the sections 1, 2, 3. Roll a dice and spin the spinner. Multiply together the number on the top of the dice and the number the spinner rests on. How many different results can you get? Is the probability of getting an even number the same as getting an odd number?  

3) Students play the “What’s in the bag” game with your family. You are the mini Miss Matich. Make sure you explain the game properly. Can they make a correct guess?

Next week, we will be starting cross grouping for mathematics throughout Nikau Syndicate. Our focus for the term is fractions, proportions and ratios.

Here are some fractions questions for you:
  1. Mrs Pizza orders pizza cut into 8 slices. Her daughter eats 1/4 of the pizza. Her son eats 1/2 of the pizza and she eats one slice. Is there any pizza left? What fraction of the pizza did the family eat?




  1. Mrs. Leary’s class visited the animal shelter to see the animals that were available for adoption. They counted 24 animals in all.
  • 1/3 of the animals were dogs. The rest were cats.
a) How many dogs were at the shelter?
b) How many cats were at the shelter?
  • Explain how you know your answers are correct.
