Remember that this is a guideline. You still have Monday/Tuesday of Week 10 to continue your Inquiry Project.
This week, your home learning task is to make sure you are on track in your Inquiry learning.
So, you are continuing your classroom learning at home.
This is a time for you to self-manage and to make sure you are on track.
To help keep yourself on track, I have put some guidelines in brackets next to each part.
You will still have time in class to complete these tasks, however, you will need to work on them at home to get to part 5 and be ready to present in Week 10.
Remember:
- Don’t go too far ahead without talking to the other members of your party. This is a collaborative process.
- Make sure you use the comment section to communicate with other members of your party if you are working at home.
- Use your Party Planning Update document to give yourself more information on the specifics of each part of your Inquiry task.
Stay focused and work hard.

6) (You, Your, Yours, You're) the greatest student. I’m so lucky to have you in our class.
7) (You, Your, Yours, You're) an awesome friend.
Your second task this week is to write a letter to...YOURSELF!
So, over this past week, we have been thinking about learning celebrations, proud moments and next steps to share with our families next week. But, what do you need to tell yourself? Your homework task this week is to take a moment to think about the person who entered Ruma Iwa in February of this year, 6 months ago.
Topics you can include:
- What are you proud of?
- Do you have any regrets so far?
- What’s something you really want to work hard at by the end of the year?
- What are your successes?
- Do you have any frustrations or worries?
- Are you happy with your friendships?
- What goals do you have over the next few months?
- Any kind words to yourself?
- Any serious words to yourself?
- What else? You choose.
Note:
- This writing task should be half a page - to a page, size 12 font.
- You can hand write it or add it to the end of your google doc.
- This document will be kept private between you and me. You are welcome to share your home learning with others, but remember that when you share, anyone who has access to their folders can view your work too.
Happy writing,
Miss Matich

Ruma Iwa’s Home Learning - Term 3, Week 3
Handed out: Friday the 8th of August Due: Friday the 15th of August
This week, your Home learning requires you to do some thinking about the use of GAFE (Google Accounts for Education) and the use of Chromebooks in our class. This is your chance to give YOUR feedback. It’s not what your sister thinks, your teacher, or your parents.
Do you think it’s helping your learning?
What do you like about it?
Are you happy with your learning?
If you are stuck for ideas, feel free to talk about the following:
- How’s your engagement in your learning?
- Do you think you are getting through your work faster or slower or the same?
- Are you excited to share your learning with classmates/parents/teacher?
- What do you like about Google Docs/Apps?
- What do you think about your current amount of screen time?
- Are you enjoying collaborating (working together) on projects?
- Do you think you are being a safe digital citizen when using the device?
- Are you making smart choices?
- Is your email helping? Are you using it?

Do you have any suggestions or ideas for improvements?
After talking about the kinds of decisions we/I/you make, I was interested to see that I make all of our timetable decisions.
If you were in charge of our timetable for the week, what would it look like? What time would school start? What time would school end?
You need to add in the starting time and ending time in the times column. You can choose how long lunch and morning tea are and what time they start.
When is Maths, Reading, Writing, Spelling, Inquiry, P.E/Fitness, Assembly, Buddy Time, Library time?
YOU get to choose. What do you include in your timetable or do you get rid of anything?
Happy Planning
Ruma Iwa’s Home Learning - Term 3, Week 2
Handed out: Friday the 1st of August Due: Friday 8th of August
This week during reading we have been reading stories about New Zealand and some of the decisions made in our country. Some of the stories we have read are called:
- Becoming a Kiwi
- Poll Tax in New Zealand
- To Spray or not to Spray
- Our Playground
All of these stories have something in common. That is, they all have a story line of decision making. Everyone makes decisions. Mums and Dads make important decisions for us, Grandparents make important family decisions, Teachers make important learning decisions, and children make decisions every day.
This weeks homework is to think about who makes the decisions in your family and what kinds of decisions are made.
Who decides what’s for dinner? Who decides what time I have to wake up in the morning? Who decides when I should go to bed? Who decides what toys I play with? Who decides if I should brush my teeth or not? Who decides if I should do the dishes? Who decides if I should get the mail from the letter box? Who decides if I should call a friend? Who decides how I behave? Who decides where we live?
In order to organise these ideas, you will need to fill out the venn diagram about decisions. (Over the page)
There are three parts:
1) Make a list of decisions I make
2) Make a list of the decisions we make together (Middle section)
2) Make a list of decisions adults make
The second part of your homework is to
- practise your spelling words
- practise your basic facts using your basic facts rocket
- give someone a compliment
And if you haven’t already - it would be a great idea to show your family your google drive folder and some of the work we have been doing.
Have a great weekend,
Miss Matich
Ruma Iwa’s Home Learning - Term 3, Week 1
Handed out: Friday the 25th of July Due: Friday the 1st of August
Dear Parents and Whanau
This week in maths your child has participated in a unit called “Counting on Probability”. The activities in this unit have focused on the counting of possible outcomes and simple events. We have learnt to count the number of outcomes. We have also learnt how to find the probabilities of different outcomes. Here are three problems you can try at home. Your child’s homework is to try at least one, but feel free to do both.
1) Dice and Dollar: How many different outcomes are there when a dice is rolled and a dollar coin is tossed together? What is the probability of getting a head and an even number? What is the probability of getting tails and an odd number?
2) Dice and Spinner: Make a cardboard spinner that is divided into three equal sections (⅓). Number the sections 1, 2, 3. Roll a dice and spin the spinner. Multiply together the number on the top of the dice and the number the spinner rests on. How many different results can you get? Is the probability of getting an even number the same as getting an odd number?
3) Students play the “What’s in the bag” game with your family. You are the mini Miss Matich. Make sure you explain the game properly. Can they make a correct guess?
Enjoy investigating these probability activities with your child.
Next week, we will be starting cross grouping for mathematics throughout Nikau Syndicate. Our focus for the term is fractions, proportions and ratios.
Here are some fractions questions for you:
- Mrs Pizza orders pizza cut into 8 slices. Her daughter eats 1/4 of the pizza. Her son eats 1/2 of the pizza and she eats one slice. Is there any pizza left? What fraction of the pizza did the family eat?
- Mrs. Leary’s class visited the animal shelter to see the animals that were available for adoption. They counted 24 animals in all.
- 1/3 of the animals were dogs. The rest were cats.
a) How many dogs were at the shelter?
b) How many cats were at the shelter?
- Explain how you know your answers are correct.
Ruma Iwa’s Home Learning - Week 9
Friday the 27th of June
Due: Thursday the 3rd of July.
This Term we have had many successes. We have learnt a lot about energy, fossil fuels, renewable energy, writing explanations, making connections in our reading, and lots of computer skills. We have created books for our library and ibooks for our ipads. We have been working hard at keeping fit by jump-jamming and running Bushey way. We’ve participated in cross country, electives, syndicate singing and we’ve shared our goals with you all through three way conferences.
One of my favourite successes this term was hearing from relievers/Mrs Evans/Mrs Cavanagh, who have all been in Room 9 over the term about how self managing Room 9 students are. It has made me so proud to be their teacher! I can see such improvements in independence, self management, leadership, and making the right choices since the beginning of the year. It’s sad to say that sometimes I can sit back and watch Room 9 work like a well oiled machine (for a few minutes anyway). I can’t wait to see what the next two terms bring. So well done my unstoppable Ruma Iwa Tamariki!
So, this week’s home learning is to write a paragraph and one of your successes. What have you been really proud of? What do you feel you have worked on really well? When did you feel successful this term?
We have blogged a lot this term, so if you need help remembering all the fabulous work we’ve done, flick through the Term 2 blog posts. I can’t wait to read what you come up with!
Miss Matich

Friday the 6th of June
Over the weekend, it would be a fabulous idea to start thinking about your explanation and do some planning. We will have time set aside next week in class to do some research, but remember you should choose a topic that you already know something about.
You can use this planning template if you would like to. Otherwise you can use space in your book.
Don't forget to think about:
- Introduction
- Paragraph 1
- Paragraph 2
- Paragraph 3 (If you have one)
and your conclusion.

Ruma Iwa’s Home Learning - Week 5
Friday the 30th of May
This past week, we have been learning all about how to write explanations.
We know they start with an introduction. You can introduce a topic using facts, a joke, or some questions. Then, we can start to explain what something is, how it works, what it’s linked to, why it does something, and sometimes it’s history. You can link it to our world - we call this ‘bigger picture’ writing. Lastly, explanations end with a brief summary, concluding the main point of the explanation. Over the past week, we have been writing about how birds can sit on power lines without getting electrocuted.
This has prompted us to read a wonder a day from http://wonderopolis.org
It’s also a free ipad app, so sometimes we look it up on there as well.
We have learnt about heroes, how roller coasters work, the biggest shark in the world and lots of other wonders. What do you wonder about?
This week’s homework is to share our favourite wonder with our family.
In addition to sharing their wonder, children will need to start thinking about their writing topic for Week 5. We will be explaining how something works. It could be a potato peeler, an electricity generator, a skateboard, or a camera. If they are able to - they can bring this to school. If it’s not suitable a photo or the idea itself will be suitable.
I have shared my wonder with my family: __________________________________
I will be writing about: _________________________________________________

Term 2, Week 2: Tuesday the 13th of May
This week, we are coming home with a survey about energy.
It is to get us thinking about how much energy we use but also ideas about energy and saving energy.
Happy energy investigating!
Just a reminder:
- All children have basic facts rockets for knowledge
- All children have spelling words
- All children have library books issued from the library for reading.
- There are a number of learning games on our blog if you would like your children to continue their learning at home
Thanks,
Krista Matich
