Participation and Leadership!!!

This term in Room 9 we got into groups and we had to make a game up. We had to use 4 things.
1 hula hoop.
4 cones
1 netball/basketball.
Also 2 or more teams.
We had 25 minutes to create the game and then over the past couple of weeks we have played the game with the whole class. All of the games have been successful and I hope we can play them again. So keep up the great Leadership and Participation Ruma Iwa Unstoppables!!!!!

Main Idea

Literacy Time!!

For literacy this week, we have been learning about main ideas.

A main idea is usually in one paragraph and found in the topic sentence in a piece of writing. We are reading paragraphs and are answering questions about what we have just read and where the main ideas and supporting details, we then start marking with a buddy.

Here is a few examples about Main Ideas...

Exercise: 1
1. The main idea of this paragraph is: C
2. The supporting detail is: B

Small Moments

For writing we have been learning all about writing small moments. Ruma Iwa learnt how to link seperate documents.

Each child chose a slide and found a picture matching what the moment was about. Every small moment has planning words and starting ideas, it is like planting a seed and watching a beautiful plant grow.

Click the link Here for your dose of small moments!!!

Hey, Ruma Iwa's viewers. My name is Al and I will be one of the class blog authors.

Home learning Week 5-6

Ruma Iwa’s Home Learning - Term 3, Week 5-6
Handed out: Friday the 22nd of August    Due: Friday the 29th of August

We have been doing some work around the words you’re and your because we sometimes get the two confused.

Circle/Highlight the correct word in each statement:

1) I believe that these chocolate chip cookies are (you, your, yours, you're).

2) Please use your napkin when (you, your, yours, you're) eating lunch.

3) Did (you, your, yours, you're) injure (you, your, yours, you're) ankle when you fell?

4) Since (you, your, yours, you're) late, we had to start without you.

5) Please wave at me when (you, your, yours, you're) leave.

6) (You, Your, Yours, You're) the greatest student. I’m so lucky to have you in our class.

7) (You, Your, Yours, You're) an awesome friend.

Your second task this week is to write a letter to...YOURSELF!
So, over this past week, we have been thinking about learning celebrations, proud moments and next steps to share with our families next week. But, what do you need to tell yourself? Your homework task this week is to take a moment to think about the person who entered Ruma Iwa in February of this year, 6 months ago.

Topics you can include:
- What are you proud of?
- Do you have any regrets so far?
- What’s something you really want to work hard at by the end of the year?
- What are your successes?
- Do you have any frustrations or worries?
- Are you happy with your friendships?
- What goals do you have over the next few months?
- Any kind words to yourself?
- Any serious words to yourself?
- What else? You choose.

Note:
- This writing task should be half a page - to a page, size 12 font.
- You can hand write it or add it to the end of your google doc.
- This document will be kept private between you and me. You are welcome to share your home learning with others, but remember that when you share, anyone who has access to their folders can view your work too.

Happy writing,
Miss Matich

The 10 story beehive continued..

Hey I am Jess
Listen here either run as far away as you can or put on very big earmuffs because I love purdy and girly music really loud! And I am very mischief so sorry about the watermelons and here is why when someone walks past my open door they get pelted by lot’s of watermelons! Sorry. . . . . . NOT!!!!! Anyway I Better get some juicy watermelons to pelt my neighbor Sophie.K with. She is even more annoying than me! She is also sooo bossy! And that is saying something!

Hi, I’m Sophie.key.
And yes i’m annoying, Just like Jess said.
Jess is so annoying Because she always puts on her music really loud and I have to call noise control. Anyway by the way John key is my dad and he’s always working so I never get to see him much. I also have a awesome twin sister and her name is sophie.key she is sometimes annoying but not much, now I’ll put you on to soph…..

Oh yes it is me, Sophie.key.
I HATE having a twin sister that always jumps on her bed (her bed squeaks really bad) all night long and party with the noise extra loud. It’s annoying because I want to give revenge but i just don't know what. But I’m usually nice to her because she's my twin, but shes not always as nice but is MOSTLY AWESOME (JUST LIKE ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but i’m WAY MORE) .
Anyway i’ll pass you onto John key AKA: me and my twins dad.

Hi my name is Al Fox. But everyone calls me John Key.
My children have been very annoying and cheeky over the past few days. So it isn’t my fault. I do hardly any work and I mostly annoy my daughters and my nanny, who lives on level 9. I always have a party at my apartment but I always get complaints from my neighbours from level 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. Also levels 9 and 10. I make as much mess as I want because I don’t have to clean it up. Any way let me pass you on to my childrens nanny and my cleaner. Milly. But she is lazy so she says that she is sick EVERY single day. So I have to call back-up cleaners. Milly is also the office of the speaker.

Hi, i’m Milly,
Yes I am the cleaner, nanny and office of the speaker.
It’s not the easiest thing working 3 jobs but I get through it anyway and i’m not lazy I work ½ an hour a week and have more important things to do instead of watching some smelly kids all day! And out of all of this I only get paid $15 dollars a week that’s enough to cover all my needed lollies though. What did you say Zena you want me hurry up?
Well I better pass you onto Zena the very loud Whip or she might whip me, bye.

Hello, I’m the Whip! Well, I’m not really the whip, I,m a cat. Infact, I’m The right honorable, SERGEANT cat if you like. But people round here just call me cat. Nobody knows that I am a cat. They think I’m a Whip. Johnny and Bobby deal with all the political stuff. In return, I spare their feathery, pea-brained lifes. It’s tempting though. My master runs the whole building so, my life here is real cruisy most of the time. Well, I’m off to catch some pigeons. Johnny and Bobby want me to sign some stupid sheet but what they don’t know can’t hurt them. Bye, see you later!

We are learning to Summarise

The Beginning of the 10 story beehive...

Hi, my name is Miss Matich.
This is my class Ruma Iwa.
We live in the Beehive.
And when I say ‘beehive’, I mean the Parliament Beehive, not a bee beehive.
So, what are you waiting for?
Come on up!

Hey, My name is Grace and I live on level two of the beehive. I’m always sitting on the couch watching movies on the telly and I have it turned up so loud my floor rumbles and my roof shake so my  neighbours get angry. Oops! I guess I have the telly turned up too loud so my neighbour Romana up on the third floor is on my case... Gotta run!!

            HI my name’s Romana,
Grace has probably told you about me!
I live on the third floor of the beehive. We have LOTS of fun here! Do you want to have a look around but let me warn you… There is a HUGE Beehive with BLOOD SUCKING BEE’S
Don’t worry too much it won’t bite unless you move. Ok gotta go. Oh, you’ll meet our friend Sam at the fourth floor! Bye

Hey I’m Sam
You must’ve heard a lot about me from Romana.
Really no? OH Romana. I live in the fourth floor. In here it’s nice. All I ever do Is play video games, minecraft and roblox. I play about 6 hours a day. Hee Hee! One time I kicked John Key outta here. Oops! Occasionally I draw, but Jess’s purdy and girly music distracts me upstairs. How do you spell girly? J.E.S.S Actually c'mon! I think me and Jess need to have a talk. This isn’t gonna be pretty. 5th floor here we come!

Some Inquiry Links

Map:

Josh's Small Moment

Whoops

“Yum! This is a very nice icecream, thanks mum”.

“Anytime dear, now lets walk down the jetty to try and spot some fish”.
“OK”. I said as I strolled down the jetty. It was a very long, very wide and ready to collapse. As we get to the end mum yells “Look, a HUGE trout!” As I run to have a look as this giant fish as well as try to finish my ice-cream before it melts, I wasn’t looking where I was going so I end up tripping over a loose, rotten plank of wood and go flying right into an old lady (probably about 78 years old). The old lady lost her balance and fell right into the dirty, brown ocean. Oh no! I thought to myself. What have I done? It was so lucky though because she surfaced again. That was very lucky. I turn and face mum standing there as red as a boiled beetroot. “Joshua!” she yells turning purple. “What do you have to say for yourself!” “Whoops”. I say, whoops.

Our Trip to Paremata (Parliament)

Our new learning:
- David Carter is the Speaker of the house. He is the landlord of parliament and the only person that can sleep there.
- The Beehive is 10 stories tall.
- The Mace is 140cm long as is made of real gold and silver. It's currently worth $500,000.
- Helen Clark is New Zealand's first elected female prime minister.
- Parliament is made up of 4 main buildings. It's made from marble and there is real gold painted on top of some of the inside roof.
- The election is being held on the 20th of September.
- The Speaker is like the referee.
- When you speak to John Key, you must use Prime Minister or Sir to address him.
- Parliament has 60 librarians. They have enough book shelving to hold books from Wellington to Paekakariki.
- Richard John Seddon the the Prime Minister for 13 years. There is a statue of him outside of Parliament.
- Parliament was build the same time the Titanic was built.
- Everything said in parliament is typed or recorded. Can you imagine if this was your job?

AND...
- Out of 29 children who came to Parliament today, 22 are considering a job at parliament.

My small moment - by Jorden

I looked at the really steep hill ready to go up it. I felt really calm when my sister Nichole said that we are going to trot. I never heard that word before. It sounded like the horse will go nice and slow. My fingers felt numb and cold. I had been in the same position since we started riding our horses. I had been riding for an hour but it felt like I had been riding the whole day! Suddenly, my horse started sprinting at top speed. My helmet was too big for me and it was going up and down. I kept lifting of the saddle, thats how bumpy it was.
“I don’t like this!” I yelled holding on as tight as I can. I thought I would go flying off the saddle. My heart started pounding fast. Finally we came to a stop. I was glad that it was all over.
“I don’t want to trot again”, I said out loud. Nichole and her best friend started laughing.

Math's Week is coming...

A fantastic ending

Arms up, grip toes, lean over, bend knees taking a big breath. Ready, steady go!
Stroke, stroke, stroke, stroke, breath.
I think again.
I think stroke, stroke, stroke, stroke, breath again. I keep repeating until I get to the end of the pool. I look to my sides, know one’s there. I think to myself, don't look back, that will make me come last. I get to the end I get up in the water. I look to my left then to my right, I notice everyone was already there. I get out of the pool and I can feel my tears slowly sliding down my cheek.

Miss Matich wishes she could write like Zena...

A wave of ecstasy sweeps over my body as I leap out of the rental car. A ray of warm energy hits my face and my eyes lay on the greenest grass you’ve ever seen, rolling over a clan of small hills and stretching for miles and miles. The ground is in a blur as I run to the place it was last seen. Blistering pain reaches me by the time I realise that I am here. I look around but don’t find it. Confusion and worried-ness seeps into my head. It’s GOT to be here!😦! Suddenly, I see it. It is the most miraculous thing you have ever seen, deep, haunting chocolate eyes and shining, silky red fur, giving the impression of a flickering flame, fierce but wonderful.
This is MY fox.
