Today in Reading we read about how children in different places use, get and conserve water.
We read case studies from Australia, Ethiopia and Israel.
Here are some summaries we wrote together:
Oliver from Australia
- They get their water from dams, pipes and taps.
- Sets an egg timer and has four minute showers
- When they are having a shower, they use a bucket to collect the grey-water and then put this water on their gardens
- They have flushing toilets, dishwashers, washing machines showers, baths and gardens.
Ori from Israel
- They get water from Lake Kennet
- They have a water meter outside their house, and if they use too much water they get a huge fine/bill!
- Instead of filling up a sink to wash dishes, they spray the dishes with water and then wash with detergent and then spray it off - they don't fill up the sink.
- They buy bottled water instead of turning on a tap because it saves money!
-They don't have much water because it doesn't rain much and they are surrounded by other countries, not like us we're surrounded in water! Lucky us!
Ayana from Ethiopia
- They have to walk 1.5 hours just to get to the water hole
- When they collect their water they have to boil it to get rid of the germs and bacteria
- They use water on a cloth to wipe their bodies to clean themselves. They use a special stick to brush their teeth
- They don't have fresh water :(
- They use water for drinking, washing and cooking!
Overall:
We decided that if we could choose, Australia would be the best country to live in for water.
If we had to choose a second option,
we all decided that Israel would be our second option if based only water!
None of us would like to live in Ethiopia if our decision was based on water.
Question 6 asked us:
"Do we all have a responsibility to use water wisely, why and why not?"
- Yes we do, otherwise the world would end! - Jorden
- Everything would die if we didn't use water wisely - Eliana
- We need to save water so it can be shared with others - Grace
- Yes we do have a responsibility because if we don't have the responsibility then we won't be living - Tino
So, as a class, we agree we are responsible for our water!
Watch this space to see what action/ideas we can think of to become smarter with our water use!
