Home learning Week 5

Ruma Iwa’s Home Learning - Week 5
Friday the 30th of May

This past week, we have been learning all about how to write explanations.
We know they start with an introduction. You can introduce a topic using facts, a joke, or some questions. Then, we can start to explain what something is, how it works, what it’s linked to, why it does something, and sometimes it’s history. You can link it to our world - we call this ‘bigger picture’ writing. Lastly, explanations end with a brief summary, concluding the main point of the explanation. Over the past week, we have been writing about how birds can sit on power lines without getting electrocuted.

This has prompted us to read a wonder a day from http://wonderopolis.org
It’s also a free ipad app, so sometimes we look it up on there as well.
We have learnt about heroes, how roller coasters work, the biggest shark in the world and lots of other wonders. What do you wonder about?

This week’s homework is to share our favourite wonder with our family.
Furthermore, if you choose, you can check out http://wonderopolis.org and explore together.

In addition to sharing their wonder, children will need to start thinking about their writing topic for Week 5. We will be explaining how something works. It could be a potato peeler, an electricity generator, a skateboard, or a camera. If they are able to - they can bring this to school. If it’s not suitable a photo or the idea itself will be suitable.

I have shared my wonder with my family: __________________________________
